Eagles on Fences
Blue-blooded is what I call myself. An Atenean from Prep to College. Sixteen years of being reminded to be a "man for others" and to always do things "for the greater glory of God" (Ad Mojorem Dei Gloriam). Our school logo carried the motto "Lux in Domino" (Light in the Lord).
Next year, my high school batch will be the silver jubilarians (HS 1981). We are currently in the planning stages for our homecoming and fund-raising activities. During this time, we remember the values the Ateneo has inculcated in us. We are reminded that heroes such as, Jose Rizal, Antonio Luna, Gregorio del Pilar came from the same institution.
Amid the surge of events during the recent weeks, I have become disillusioned with my school. Where are the Jesuits who have always been outspoken and have gone against the status quo to fight for TRUTH and JUSTICE; to serve GOD and COUNTRY?
The refusal to take a stand has gone unnoticed. The seeming preference to take the safe route does not seem to be what is expected of the Atenean. Where are the wings of the Blue Eagle? When will it carry the people's cry across the sky? Will the Atenean come down from the hill?
I believe the issue is a choice between MORALITY and ECONOMY. Isn't that supposed to be a no-brainer for the soldiers of Ignacio de Loyola? La Salle has gone out on a limb and taken a stand. Other schools and institutions have done the same. Where do the blue eagles stand? It seems they are content to sit on the fences and watch as the events go by.
This coming Sunday, during the Ateneo vs. La Salle UAAP game, when once again the blue of Ateneo and the green of La Salle converge at the coliseum in Cubao, I can proudly say with all my heart and shout with my loudest voice...
...for Truth and Justice; for God and Country ... ANIMO LA SALLE!!!
