"Doing well, by doing good!"

I was struck by this quotation shared with me by my good friend Rapa Lopa, a long-time NGO advocate. He mentioned this during a meeting we were having for an "Iwas-Dengue" campaign we were going to handle. We were presenting our ideas and plans to the General Manager of the company that sells Baygon and OFF! in the Philippines.

It is an advocacy we are planning to pursue. Rapa, together with some friends and I, are in the process of putting up a cause marketing agency that seeks to pursue CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiatives by linking companies with NGOs. For us, it is a much needed venture because government cannot meet the needs of the majority and we were hoping that the private sector could assist in nation-building. It's just a matter of determining how and with whom. Many companies want to help but just don't know what to do or where to start. This is where we come in. We create campaigns or programs that would match a company with an NGO and they would together embark on an advocacy.

A few years ago, companies were preoccupied with getting an ISO certification. It was the buzz word then. Nowadays, CSR is the buzz word and company CEOs are changing the direction of companies by reaching out to the communities. It is our job to see to it that these programs are sustainable and not just one shot deals for media mileage, image building or "pogi" points.

I am very excited about this venture. Although it may not be a lucrative endeavor, the satisfaction factor that you have helped is ... priceless!

By the way, the company's name is Advocacy Communicators Asia, Inc. (ADVOCOM ASIA) ... "Doing well, by doing good!"
