Maxie Zola
Diamond's Precious Gem is her name in the pedigree papers but to us she is Maxie. Maxie is our pet. She is a female basset hound that we got in 1999. When we got her, she was 3 months old which makes her 7 years old now. we got her from a place in Quezon City. I still remember that when Aina and I got to the place where she was, a father and his daughter were taking a look at her but couldn't decide. When they left, Aina and I approached the cage where she was and she started jumping. From that moment, we fell in love with her and quickly paid for her. She didn't smell too good when we got her. She was our second basset. Our first one was Reppie, a male, whom we got in 1998. We got Maxie to keep Reppie company.
Maxie got pregnant in 2002. We didn't know she was pregnant until we asked the vet to take a look at her. The ultrasound revealed that she had 3-4 pups inside her. After a week, she appeared to get very, very weak and dehydrated. We brought her back to the vet and we were told that the pups were depleting her calcium and she had to be given doses of calcium or she would die.
We were not sure when she would give birth since we did not know the exact date when she got pregnant so we left her in the vet about a week before she was to approximately give birth. When the vet called to tell us that she had given birth, we were surprised to find out that there were 12 puppies. 3 died at birth so we were left with 9 (7 female and 2 male). A few days after, 1 pup got an infection and died. Since Maxie couldn't feed all of them, we had to assist in the feeding. Feeding was round-the-clock, every four hours, so Rinnah, Aina and I took shifts. We had to weigh each pup everytime to determine how much formula we were to give. After every feeding, we also had to clean the pups. Although hard and tiring, we enjoyed caring for the puppies. From the 8 left, we sold 6, we gave 1 to a bishop, and we kept 1, which we named Bucky.
Bucky and Reppie have passed on (in dog owners' terms, they are now in Rainbow Bridge). They had kidney failure because they were poisoned from a contaminated batch of Pedigree food. Pedigree paid us but we still feel that it did not compensate for our loss. We were so sad when they left us.
Now, only Maxie is left. Aina fondly calls her Maxie Zola. While I call her Maxie Girlie. She is smart and very funny. She always cries whenever she sees us all-dressed to leave. We don't know how she knows that we are going somewhere. She always runs to the car hoping that we would open the door to let her ride. During the times we would let her ride with us, she would cry inside the car. Maybe she thinks we are going to the vet again.
She follows us everywhere. She even sleeps in between Rinnah and Aina. Me, I sleep on the floor because of a bad back. Sometimes, she sleeps beside me.
She's such a spoiled hound. Now that she is old, she has to have a special diet of boiled chicken and special dog food (for dogs with urinary problems). She even has 2 shirts that she uses when Aina feels like dressing her up. She has a tank top from Rockwell and a shirt that Aina bought from Old Navy in San Francisco. She has too use special shampoo because her skin develops flaking when she uses ordinary shampoo. She even has a leash and collar with an animal print design, very chic!
I really marvel at the loyalty and intelligence of Maxie. I hope that she stays with us for a long time. Reppie and Bucky can wait for her a little longer because I don't think she will go to Rainbow Bridge soon. Not if we can help it because for us she is indeed a Precious Gem.
