Taking New Manila By Storm

Last Thursday, a typhoon passed directly over Metro Manila. The typhoon, with code name "Milenyo" hit at about 1:00pm. Trees were swaying wildly and the howling wind could be heard all over. Rinnah, Aina and I could only watch with awe at the power of Milenyo. Although not categorized as a super typhoon, Milenyo caused so much damage all over the country. The whole of Luzon was thrust into total blackout. New Manila had no electricity of three days. We had to cook all the food in our freezer to avoid spoilage. When we went out to buy some batteries and candles, we were shocked to see all the debris in the streets. The mango trees that lined New Manila's streets were either uprooted or dismembered.






Electricity was restored last night after Meralco repaired the wires, cut trees and put up fallen electrical posts. There is still no cable TV. We were relying totally on radio, eating by candle light, sleeping in so much heat. Water was also a bit of a problem since the water pumps were not working.

What an experience!! Another typhoon is coming. Once it hits the country, it will be be called "Neneng". I hope it doesn't travel the same path as Milenyo.
